In 1981 we were given a boat. Here we have Mike and Brian Jones, on
San Diego Bay, in January of that year. As you can see, it was a
typically beautiful day to be on the water, as long as you manage to
stay off the rocks.
You might also note the lack of an engine cover. This was necessary as the engine required frequent encouragement to run. The last trip out the fuel pump failed while the crew was in the middle of San Diego bay. Fortunately there was an trigger-operated oiler on board, used to prime the engine prior to starting. It was filled with gasoline and the engine kept running by squirting fuel into the throat of the carborator. Someday we may chronicle our adventures with a 14 ft Hobie Cat, which we bought for a song and then put more into reparing than it would have cost to purchase a new one. We named the Hobie "Stone Soup" after the Eurpoean folk tale of the same name. |
