John, Eliza, children Mary and William, brother Thomas and sister Anne sailed from Liverpool, England to New York City, New York.
The voyage required 6 weeks. The trip to St. Charles, Ill. took them via the Hudson River to Albany, New York, the Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York and the Great Lakes to Chicago, Ill.
Their home was in St. Charles for 9 months and then on to a farm one and a half miles to the east for 5 years. They went to Charter Grove, Ill. in Feb. 1857 and removed to Sycamore, Ill. in Dec. 1906.
It is reported that John's cash assets on arrival in the United States amounted to 30 cents and that a five dollar loan was negotiated in Chicago, Ill. He died a wealthy farmer.
